‘Inside the Most Talked-About Michael Jackson Biopic’

Few artists in history have shaped popular culture as profoundly as Michael Jackson. Known globally as the “King of Pop,” Jackson revolutionized music videos, dance choreography, and the spectacle of modern pop performance. Yet his legacy is also complicated, marked by both extraordinary artistic achievements and decades of controversy.
Hollywood is now attempting to capture that complex story in Michael, a large-scale biographical film directed by Antoine Fuqua. Even before its release, the project has become one of the most talked-about films in development, drawing attention for its ambitious scope, unusual casting decisions, and the delicate task of portraying one of the most polarizing figures in modern entertainment.
The film is being produced by Graham King, the Academy Award–winning producer behind Bohemian Rhapsody. That film chronicled the life of Queen’s Freddie Mercury and went on to gross nearly $1 billion worldwide while winning several Oscars. Naturally, expectations are extremely high for Michael, which aims to tell the story of an artist whose influence arguably rivals or surpasses Mercury’s.
Bringing Michael Jackson’s Life to the Screen
Director Antoine Fuqua, best known for Training Day and The Equalizer trilogy, is leading the project with a screenplay written by John Logan, an Oscar-nominated writer known for Gladiator and Skyfall. The creative team suggests that Michael will attempt a comprehensive portrait of Jackson’s life — from his childhood rise to fame in The Jackson 5 to his later years as one of the most famous and controversial celebrities in the world. Michael Jackson’s real life offers no shortage of dramatic material. Born in Gary, Indiana, he began performing at an early age alongside his brothers in The Jackson 5, quickly becoming the standout talent in the group. Their success in the late 1960s and early 1970s turned the young Jackson into a child star almost overnight.
But it was his solo career that would cement his place in music history. Albums like Off the Wall (1979), Thriller (1982), Bad (1987), and Dangerous (1991) transformed him into a global cultural phenomenon. Thriller, in particular, remains the best-selling album of all time, while Jackson’s groundbreaking music videos changed how audiences experienced pop music. Yet alongside the triumphs came intense scrutiny. Jackson’s later life was overshadowed by allegations, legal battles, and the pressures of global fame — elements that make telling his story on screen both fascinating and controversial.
Casting the King of Pop
One of the most widely discussed aspects of the film is its casting. The filmmakers chose two actors to portray Michael Jackson at different stages of his life. Young Michael will be played by Juliano Krue Valdi, focusing on his early years as a child performer and rising star.
The adult version of Jackson will be portrayed by Jaafar Jackson, who is not only an actor but also the real-life nephew of Michael Jackson. The casting immediately drew attention due to the family connection, with some observers questioning whether the portrayal would remain objective.
However, Lionsgate executives appear confident in the choice. At CinemaCon 2024, the studio screened an early sizzle reel featuring Jaafar Jackson in the role. According to attendees, his physical resemblance to the singer — combined with his ability to recreate Jackson’s distinctive voice, movement, and stage presence — left a strong impression on the audience.
A Powerful Supporting Cast
Beyond the central role, Michael features an impressive ensemble cast portraying the key figures in Jackson’s life.
Nia Long plays Jackson’s mother, Katherine Jackson, who was widely regarded as the emotional anchor of the Jackson family. Colman Domingo, a two-time Oscar nominee, takes on the role of Joe Jackson, Michael’s father and manager.
Joe Jackson remains one of the most controversial figures in the singer’s life. While he was instrumental in guiding The Jackson 5 to global fame, he has also been widely criticized for his strict and sometimes abusive parenting methods. Exploring that dynamic is likely to play a major role in the film’s early chapters. Other cast members include Miles Teller as John Branca, Jackson’s longtime attorney and one of the executors of his estate, as well as Derek Luke as the legendary lawyer Johnnie Cochran, who defended Jackson during the 1993 child molestation allegations.
The inclusion of these figures suggests that the film will not shy away entirely from the controversies that defined Jackson’s later years — though how deeply those events will be explored remains a major topic of discussion.
Why the Film Might Become Two Movies
One of the most interesting developments surrounding Michael is the possibility that the project may evolve into two separate films.
Reports indicate that the original cut of the film ran well over three hours, prompting discussions within Lionsgate about expanding the story into a two-part cinematic biography. The first installment would reportedly focus on Jackson’s childhood and early solo success, potentially concluding with the release of Off the Wall in 1979.
A second film, currently rumored to be in development, would then explore the peak of Jackson’s global fame during the Thriller era and the complicated chapters that followed. Splitting the story could serve both creative and strategic purposes. The early years of Jackson’s career are widely remembered as inspirational — a story of extraordinary talent and ambition. His later life, however, is far more complex and divisive. By separating those eras, filmmakers may be able to present a more nuanced portrait of the artist.
A Film That Will Spark Debate
Even before its release, Michael has become one of the most scrutinized films in Hollywood. Because the project is being produced in close cooperation with the Michael Jackson estate, which controls the rights to his music and likeness, many observers expect the film to portray the singer in a largely sympathetic light. For fans, the film represents a chance to celebrate the life of a musical icon whose artistry reshaped global pop culture. For critics, however, the challenge lies in whether the film can acknowledge the controversies surrounding Jackson without reducing them to footnotes.
What is clear is that the film has already captured enormous attention. From its high-profile casting to its ambitious attempt to cover one of the most complicated careers in entertainment history, Michael stands as one of the most anticipated biographical films of the decade. When audiences finally see the story unfold on screen, they will once again confront the legacy of an artist whose life was as extraordinary as it was controversial.
